#0029: wow! we found the best way to learn!

Education Next-Twenty ninth Edition

Reading time: 8.40 min

Hey 👋 - Hello, there!!

I have started reading again, and I finished reading Sugata Mitra's book Beyond the Hall in the wall that's published by Ted Ed books.

Mitra's book explored a radical idea of educational reform, in which children are encouraged to learn and teach themselves using the power of modern technology.

He experimented with putting computers with internet connection in a wall of the slum in India, and the children around the area started to learn by themselves.

The screen was visible from the street, and the PC was available to anyone who passed by. The computer had online access and a number of programs that could be used, but no instructions were given for its use.

The results of Mitra's experiment were impressive.

  • Within a very short time, the children around the area had taught themselves how to use the computer and what it was capable of. They even found out how to access and explore the internet.

  • Children actually came up with their own terminologies for the different parts of the computer

  • This experiment showed that when people are given access to technology without instructions or guidance, amazing results can be achieved.

It is an inspiring story of how people can teach themselves if given the right tools and freedom to explore. It also demonstrates the power of modern technology to transform the lives of even the most disadvantaged people.

This experiment was repeated in different places for both urban and rural kids, and similar results were seen.

This shows how technology can be used to empower people, and how access to the right tools can help people learn new skills and gain knowledge that can be used in their careers or everyday lives.

I find this really interesting and inspiring, and I'm sure it can be applied to other areas of life as well.

It just proves that anyone can learn if they are given the right tools and freedom to explore.

Learning Zone

Adi has been busy gathering digital skills these days, his interest in making YouTube videos has piqued his curiosity even more and he has been involved in making high-quality content for his channel.

Recently he has been wanting to make YouTube tutorials on things that he knows and has been busy

  • Thinking of the content

  • Recording videos

  • Editing

  • Making Thumbnails

  • Creating content that’s interesting and informative

  • Staying consistent with uploads

  • Having a positive attitude

  • Managing time effectively

  • Developing his own personal style of videos.

All this work needs skills like talking in front of the camera, and editing which he mostly does on Canva, and learning how YouTube works.

He has been taking his YouTube journey seriously and is gaining knowledge about video making, audio mixing, video editing, storytelling, etc. He wants to provide good quality content and he is learning different techniques to make it more engaging and creative.

I don't stop him from learning new stuff but I'm always there to help him out if he needs guidance. He's so enthusiastic about his work and it makes me proud.

Sometimes I feel amazed at how fast Adi is picking up the skills and knowledge of making videos, his enthusiasm for learning has really grown over the past few months.

Conscious Bonding

Bonding over the topic of Menstruation

Adi has been curious about me getting sick every 2 days because of my periods every month. When we were living alone it was not much of an issue.

But when we moved to a bigger family we also had to follow some cultural rules set by my mom of not cooking etc on those two days.

Adi was full of questions about me not being able to cook etc. I was confused as to how do I explain all this to him.

  • I started by telling him that girls have ovaries and a uterus which is a big part of their body.

  • I explained to him that every 28 days (or sometimes more or less than that depending on each woman) the uterus starts to get rid of old blood and tissue.

  • I also mentioned that not all women are the same and just like everyone has a different height and weight, each woman's menstrual cycle might be a bit different from the other.

  • I also went over some pages of Adam Kay's book with him to explain it better. of course the book covers it in quite a detail and we can choose much in detail we would like to go into.

  • By the end of our conversation, Adi understood and appreciated why women need rest during their periods and he promised to help me whenever I need it.

  • I was relieved that we had such a good talk about menstruation and that now Adi understands how important this process is for women.
