#0049: The Formula for Kids to Love Learning

Education Next-forty ninth Edition

Reading time: 8.15 min

Hey !!👋

This week lets read about:

  • When kids hate to learn

  • Adi teaches a teacher

  • Bonding with kids over slow lifestyle

  • Lessons from SpaceX Starship Launch

Is there a formula for kids to fall in love with learning?

When parents talk to me about their kids not taking interest in learning,

I know not everyone has the same struggles.

Every kid has their reason for not wanting to learn

Considering kids are curious by nature, traditional schooling only limits their learning capability.

Aren't kids mostly packed with schedules these days?

This puts them under too much pressure.

While we search for freedom when we grow up,

We do not think of letting our kids have the space to explore

All this leads to kids not being interested in learning

I have come up with my conclusion of why kids do not like to learn

This mostly includes the lack of

  • E-engagement

  • R-relevance

  • A-autonomy

  • S-support

I have explained this in the blog, do read to know more

Learning With Adi

Adi teaches my cousin

My cousin who is in his late 20's has been preparing for Government exams

He needs help with English.

So he comes to Adi to learn

and it's very nice to see how Adi helps him read and learn

I like this way of knowledge sharing where one person can help the other with what they know

Kids can be great teachers,

They like to share and teach.

Conscious Bonding

Bonding with kids over slow lifestyle

“Slow living isn’t about determining how little we can live with – it’s about working out what we simply can’t live without.”

Nathan Williams, The Kinfolk Home

We are in a rush almost every time,

Why are we not free to live the little things

Mostly its because we don't prioritize them

There is a struggle to wake up and to sleep,

We cannot leave the phone aside.

This adds so much stress to a person

The modern world is full of instant gratification and fast-paced lifestyles that make it difficult to take time for ourselves and truly enjoy the present.

We're always chasing after something, whether a promotion at work or the latest purchase.

Morning Hustles

The morning hustles are the worst when you are in a hurry to pack, eat and rush out through the door.

Unintentional consumption

We fill our extra time by consuming endless amounts of information, technology, and entertainment that can be overwhelming.

The desire to do everything

We often have the desire to do everything, which eventually leads to burnout and exhaustion. It's normal to be in the trap of accomplishing more in life.

Are we asking ourselves if we need this?

It can be beneficial to take a step back and evaluate if we need these activities or not.

It is important to choose a lifestyle that aligns with our values and priorities, rather than trying to live up to someone else's standards.

Taking breaks from social media and other sources of external validation can help us reconnect with our desires and goals.

Quote of the week

“Slow down, you’re doing fine, you can’t be everything you wanna be before your time.”… You got your passion, you got your pride

But don't you know that only fools are satisfied?

Dream on, but don't imagine they'll all come true (Oooh)

When will you realize, Vienna waits for you?… Slow down you crazy child

Take the phone off the hook and disappear for a while

It's alright, you can afford to lose a day or two

Billy Joel, lyrics from ‘Vienna’

Recommendation of the Week for kids

The failure of the Starship Rocket can teach children several valuable lessons, including:

  1. Failure is a natural part of the learning process: Children can learn that even highly skilled and experienced professionals, such as the engineers at SpaceX, can experience setbacks and failures.

  2. The importance of perseverance: Children can learn that success often requires perseverance and a willingness to keep trying even in the face of failure.

  3. The importance of collaboration: The development of the Starship rocket required the collaboration of a large team of engineers, scientists, and other professionals.

  4. The significance of innovation: SpaceX's goal of developing a fully reusable rocket that can transport people and supplies to space is an ambitious and innovative idea.

  5. The importance of safety: The Starship rocket failure highlights the importance of safety in any endeavor, especially those that involve high levels of risk.
