Education Next- Third Edition
Reading time: 5 min 10 sec
Hey 👋 - Hope you are doing great?
I have been thinking of what to do this summer since we didn't plan to go anywhere.
So, Adi has French as his third language.
But he doesn't seem to be so interested,
I noticed him all bored in the sessions.
Someone on Twitter suggested I try Duolingo.
Duolingo is a language learning app.
We logged in to the app and we loved it.
The app is very kid-friendly. Kids can go to higher levels as they keep practicing.
I noticed he is quite hooked on the app and making progress.
Learning language needs to be interactive or else you tend to lose interest.
Technology has a way of getting attention from kids.
The sound, the visuals, and the prompts seem to get their attention.
Isn't the same for adults?
The Ed-tech apps and courses are designed in such a way that it becomes easy to learn.
The gamified interface hooks people.
Of course, one should be mindful of screen time limits
So, one day there was a discussion initiated by the education experts on LinkedIn about the effect of video games,
and I realized Though it's impossible to stay away from the gadgets,
It's possible to find diverse activities of things where children can engage.
Some studies talk about the positive effect of video games on vision and skill development.
We are entitled to our opinion and values when it comes to deciding on gaming limits for kids,
But we need to be smart enough to take advantage of the tech in the best way possible
We need to find a balance where kids get ample opportunities to have physical playtime.
I have attached the link in the end.
Level Up For Your Kids
I got the inspiration to talk about the below topic after a brief chat with someone on LinkedIn.
Is your child interested in topics related to space?
Here is a great resource you can explore together.
NASA has this program called NASA Kid's Club.
They have topics like
Humans in Space
Moon to Mars
Earth
Space Tech
Solar system and beyond
STEM Engagement
There are activities for different age groups with videos that kids will definitely enjoy.
We strongly recommend this particular website where NASA lists out all the inventions that proved useful commercially.
Adi loves to learn about these inventions- you must check this out.
Becoming Your Child's Best Friend
Certain things help people bond well.
I am not sure if it has happened with you but sometimes when Adi and I,
go to restaurants or somewhere outside the house, we seem to connect at a different level.
We can talk about things we generally don't like to talk about at home
We can discuss things we can do together,
Adi discusses his plans and ideas.
Things we can improve to discipline our lifestyle etc.
I feel a shift in my mood, happier and cheerful.
Going outdoors and getting some fresh air is the trick to a good mood.
Dining together outside can be a great stress buster even a little thing as having an ice cream is amazing with kids.
When outdoors, people disconnect with their gadgets and connect on personal levels.
We have planned an outing today because the weather seems to be good,
Adi wants mangoes, so we are going to buy some.
We get these local mangoes called "Malda" and "Rasbhari" in our area.
We might research about the local mangoes later today.
I will share all about it in my next newsletter.
Quote of the Week
Jean Piaget was a Swiss psychologist. He is famous for his theory of cognitive which talks about the development of the sequence of children's intellectual development.
His theory suggests that children move through four different stages of learning. His theory focuses not only on understanding how children acquire knowledge, but also on understanding the nature of intelligence.
Cheers, Priyanka
